Information and Social Media LJ.3

I enjoyed the readings these last couple of weeks. I liked the microblogging section in weeks 4–5, as well as the reading, particularly What Is an RSS Feed? (And Where to Get It). How to use Twitter as an education tool was what stood out to me the most because after we did our Twitter assignment a few weeks ago, it really opened my eyes on how Twitter can be used for education and not just politics and whatever else people use it for. The classroom hashtag was neat because I clicked on it and saw everyone in the class expressing themselves and the things they wanted to learn throughout the course. The reading and links bounce all around on different topics of social media, which, in my opinion, is the best. For example, you can learn about many ways of microblogging instead of just focusing on one specific thing. I also think doing that can expand your knowledge, which is why I think the past weekly readings were great.

The one thing I would want to address is usage on social media. Since this is part of our other assignment for the week, I think it would be a good time to talk about it. Usage on social media affects me in a huge way because it tells me how much time I am spending on my phone. I don’t like to be known as someone who is attached to their phone, so whenever I click on my phone activity and see my time spent high, it frustrates me because sometimes I don’t even realize I'm on it as much as I am. My usage can accommodate my everyday life and my job because I don’t want to be walking around the clubhouse and fields on my phone. It is not a good look or professional, and I want to be locked in on my job and nothing else. I don’t really know what the reasoning is behind why I can be on my phone a lot. Today, everything is done via phone, including work, school, and so on. So, it's easy to be on it and do things on it without even noticing; it's just the norm.

In conclusion, the readings for these last couple weeks have been nice and informative. This class has been everything I hoped it would be. I’ve been in social media classes before, but there is just something different about this one. This specific class allows you to really open and hit on all the topics that are very current and important. The social media usage I talked about is something I really do want to improve on. This app activity journal we must do this week is going to motivate me to not have a high average time after the four days are up, and I hope to sustain that even past our assignment.

  2. Hi Mason,
I like how you organized your response to the readings. In my post I also mentioned about my usage of social media and how I don't go on my phone in more professional settings. I like how you incorporated Twitter as well for helping purposes and how our Twitter assignment helped you open your eyes.
